Dr Zak O’Brien
Director/Senior Veterinarian
Zak grew up on a cattle property around Clermont in Central Queensland and as a result has a strong passion for horses and cattle. Zak and his family breed stockhorses which are used on the cattle property and then, if they progress well, go onto being competition horses in camp drafting.
After completing high school at The Rockhampton Grammar School, Zak wanted to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and studied at James Cook University, Townsville. He graduated in 2018 then went on to work in a rural mixed practice in Charters Towers, where he predominantly worked with cattle and horses. For considerable stretches of time, Zak was the only fulltime permanent veterinarian at the practice which enabled him to develop extensive clinical skills rapidly and to gain valuable experience in veterinary practice management.
In 2020, Zak went on to do a 9-month intensive equine internship at Townsville Vet Clinic, working under a qualified equine surgeon. This enabled him to further refine his skills for both medical and surgical cases.
Zak began at Equine Veterinary Services in 2021 and has become an integral part of the team, servicing a wide array of valued clients, across a broad range of equine disciplines. He has a strong interest in equine reproduction, podiatry, lameness and also enjoys dentistry.
When not working, Zak enjoys being outdoors as he attempts to acclimatise to the Toowoomba weather! He loves keeping active with his fiancé, Megan, and has just completed his first marathon. Most spare time is spent riding and training his horses and competing at a few camp drafts. He thoroughly enjoys playing and following rugby league and is a proud supporter of the (lately useless) Newcastle Knights.
